Evidence for the connection between star formation rate and the evolutionary phases of quasars

Both theory and observations suggest that outflows driven by an active central supermassive black hole have a feedback effect on shaping the global properties of host galaxy1–8. However, whether from outflow is effective, if so, it positive or negative, long been controversial. Here, using latest catalogue Sloan Digital Sky Survey, we use flux ratio [O ii] to [Ne v] emission lines as proxy compare star formation rate in hosts quasars with different types broad absorption (BALs): low-ionization (Lo)BAL, high-ionization (Hi)BAL non-BAL. We find decreases LoBAL HiBAL quasars, then increases non-BAL quasars. Assuming sequence represents evolution, our results are consistent quenching subsequent rebound quasar galaxies. This phenomenon can be explained suppression once disappears evolve HiBALs non-BALs. Our result suggests has negative galaxy evolution. Through analysis range shown formation, demonstrated recovery rates after disappear.
